Learn-to-Sail

Learn-to-Sail Widgeons

Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

If this is your student’s first-time sailing, we require starting with Learn-to-Sail Widgeons and advancing as skills evolve, with Instructor recommendation. Our Learn-to-Sail Widgeon classes have 2-4 students and a Junior Instructor in each boat and are meant for students with no sailing experience. Instruction begins with sailing fundamentals on an O’Day Widgeon and includes care of the equipment, sailing upwind, tacking, sailing downwind, jibing, and landing at a dock.

We strongly recommend two consecutive weeks of enrollment.

Learn-to-Sail Optimists

Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

The best class for students with sailing experience and the confidence and skills to sail solo. Instruction begins with rigging fundamentals on an Optimist “Opti” dinghy, and progresses with care of the equipment, sailing upwind, tacking, sailing downwind, jibing, and landing at a dock. Opti students sail solo with instructors coaching from nearby boats. This class is not recommended for children 5’5” or taller.

We strongly recommend two consecutive weeks of enrollment.

Learn-to-Sail 420s

Monday – Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

This is an introductory class, but not a course for beginners. 420s are high-performance racing boats. To qualify for this course, sailors must have participated previously in Intermediate Widgeons or Intermediate and Racing Optimists, for a minimum of four weeks. (The four weeks can be cumulative over multiple seasons.)

This course is taught in mornings when winds are typically lighter. Nevertheless, sailors need an understanding of all basic terminology and must be able to handle the boat through all points of sail. The course builds on basic sailing skills, focuses on the specific demands of a 420, but not on the more technical aspects of racing a 420 successfully. Sailors will become capable of progressing to afternoon sailing when winds are typically stronger. Four weeks of Learn-to-Sail 420s is a prerequisite for taking Intermediate and Racing 420s.
