Intermediate and Racing Optimists
July 27 @ 1:00 pm - July 30 @ 4:00 pm$210
This is a class for Optimist sailors who have gained skill and confidence in the morning programs.
No previous racing experience is needed, but sailors must have mastered basic sailing skills in either the Learn-to-Sail Widgeon or Learn-to-Sail Optimist programs.
Students improve their skills at handling the tiller and mainsheet simultaneously. Sailors gain confidence in controlling boat speed and responding to the greater challenges of brisk, afternoon sailing conditions. Instruction seeks to improve students ability to sail upwind and down, to refine boat and sail handling, start a race, and learn basic racing rules and tactics.
Sailors participation in the Friday morning Junior Racing Series (JRS) is included in this program and is strongly encouraged. The JRS fee is included in tuition.
For sailors who prefer not to race in outside regattas, Class instruction will offer advanced skills with no regatta requirement. For those who prefer to be in regattas, we offer participation in the Unkie Cup series as well as the Beverly Junior Regatta (BJR). Unkies take place four times over the summer at various sailing clubs around Buzzards Bay. Sailors who excel in skill and enthusiasm will be chosen to represent the BSS Race Team. Selected teams will participate in regattas at the discretion of the coach/instructor, and in accordance with specific guidelines. Race Team members may vary with enrollment, skill, and interest. We do not guarantee that every student will attend regattas. Some students may be selected to participate in multiple or all regattas.
BSS coach/instructors will accompany race members, and racers may use BSS boats and equipment. Students are also encouraged to use their own boats and/or sails provided they meet the appropriate racing standards. Parents or guardians are required to travel to regattas with their student(s). Regatta fees are the responsibility of the racing student and parent or guardian.
