Intermediate and Racing 420s
July 10 @ 8:30 am - 1:00 pm$210
Intermediate and Racing 420s is our most advanced class. This is for sailors eager to improve sailing and racing skills, who are ready for the stronger afternoon breeze and have successfully completed the required minimum of four weeks in Learn-to-Sail 420s (the four weeks can be cumulative over multiple seasons). Students will expand their knowledge of 420s, and hone their racing skills under the instruction of BSS racing coaches. Learning focuses on safe, expert boat handling, hiking, tacking, jibing, points-of-sail, and introduction to spinnakers. Instruction includes skills needed for both skipper and crew, with emphasis on teamwork.
Sailors attaining required levels of skill and enthusiasm will be chosen to represent the BSS Race Team. Selected teams participate in chosen regattas in accordance with specific guidelines. Race team members may vary weekly, depending on student enrollment, skill and interest, and at the discretion of the racing coach. We do not guarantee that every student will attend regattas. Some students may be selected for multiple or all regattas.
Sailors who prefer to sail but not race in regattas are welcome in this class and may receive advanced class instruction with no outside regatta requirement. Sailors participation in the Friday morning Junior Racing Series (JRS) is included in this program and is strongly encouraged. The JRS fee is included in tuition.
BSS coach/instructors will accompany race members, and racers may use BSS boats and equipment. Students are also encouraged to use their own boats and/or sails provided they meet the appropriate racing standards. Parents or guardians are required to travel to regattas with their student(s). Regatta fees are the responsibility of student racers and/or their parent or guardian. Please refer to our calendar for the dates of the regattas.
