The Buzzards Sailing School, Inc. (BSS) is a non-profit, community sailing school for youth ages 8 to 18 located on Wings Neck in Pocasset, Massachusetts. The summer of 2019 will be our 54th year.
Classes are held for every level from beginner sailors to experienced racers. A Friday morning race series provides new and returning racers an opportunity to compete against their peers. Other racing and regatta options are available depending on interest and experience.
All classes are taught by experienced instructors in school-owned Widgeons and 420s, and a combination of school-owned and privately-owned International Optimist “Opti” dinghies. We offer a combination of land- and water-based instruction. Our water instruction takes place in one of the best sailing areas in Massachusetts and local harbors and Bassett’s Island provide many options for the perfect sail, depending on the wind and the experience of the sailor. Throughout the summer our students run drills and practices on Buzzards Bay, sail around Bassett’s Island, shelter in its lee, or play games on the island’s sandy beaches.
Our mission is to inspire young people and teach them to master the art of sailing through hands-on learning. By learning and doing, we believe young sailors will develop a lifelong love of sailing. The goal of the program is to provide students a fun and safe summer experience built around sailing and racing, with a focus on teamwork, water safety, and seamanship skills.
Graduates of this program have sailed across oceans, cruised distant coasts, captained traditional schooners and raced high-tech boats in local, collegiate, national and international competitions. Our program is run by experienced staff, many of whom have been students themselves for multiple years. They are enthusiastic about sailing at BSS and about providing all our students a positive experience.
Scholarships: BSS awards several local children, who would not otherwise be able to afford to sail in the program, a one-week scholarship. They are available on a need-based, first-come first-served basis. BSS will choose the weeks offered based upon enrollment figures and, if necessary, lend life jackets to recipients. Please email us with questions or to apply.
